watercooler

Around the corner of any street or outside any mosque, you will most certainly find a water cooler. Growing up in the streets of Jeddah, these water coolers were a blessing for us. As young boys our evenings were spent playing soccer, basketball or cricket. And only a thirsty, sweating and exasperated person knows how delicious sweet cold water tastes.

I reckon these coolers are not maintained by the government, but a complete private initiative of common public -- a service for people that is encouraged and influenced by Islamic traditions and values. One could see several people, including the scavengers, coming and filling out their water containers, may be because they cannot afford to pay for water. For the poor, who will be thankful for every riyal saved, such services must mean a lot.

With a simple and not-so-costly gesture, those who are offering such vital and valuable contribution to the society are Insha Allah earning multiple rewards, not to mention the du'a the poor would be making for them.

Here's what YOU could do if you are among those who can afford it: Arrange for a water cooler outside your villa, apartment building or nearby mosque. Get owner's permission first. Talk to the company that delivers water to your house and have the cooler filled in. Make sure it is maintained well and cleaned periodically. If you cannot do it on your own, speak to your neighbors and elders and make it a joint project.

Below are some different types of coolers you may find:
