“I HAVE known the life of evil, I have experience,” says Mutah Beale, popularly known as Napoleon – a former US rap star with over 40 million record sales worldwide, after having embraced Islam now and becoming an active da'ee. He is inviting Jeddawis to a movie. Yes, a movie.

“Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw” is a documentary film that chronicles the incredible life of Beale, from his tumultuous beginnings witnessing his parents’ murder to his rapping years rampant with violence, drugs, alcohol and other forms of vices, and then finally his turning to Islam and entering the field of da'wah (office in Shifa Riyadh).

mutah“Even in the Kingdom, some of the Muslim youth are deviating, thanks to TV, music, media – all of which (have become) tools of the Satan. I want to tell them that this is not the real life, only Islam is the way of life,” said Beale in an interview with Saudi Life.

The screenings will be at the Marriott Hotel on two different days – Jan. 12 for women and Jan.13 for men. The movie will be followed by an open question and answer round with the host – Mutah Beale.

Beale’s Website – www.lifeofanoutlaw.com – lists the objectives behind the screening of the feature length documentary: “One of the purposes of these screenings is to see if the film has its desired effect on the audience. From the feedback people give after the film, we can asses whither or not anything in the film needs to be changed or added before its official release to the public. Another purpose is to help find a distribution deal for the documentary. We want this DVD to be as accessible as possible to the masses, and in order to insure that, we need to find a company that specializes in the distribution of DVD’s. Through these screenings, we also seek to spread the message of Mutah Beale’s incredible story.”

mutah-posterThe movie has been screened in five different countries including Australia, California and Qatar. Beale said the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Citing scholar Ibn Al-Qayyim’s description of music as the “Qur’an of Satan”, Beale said that youngsters today are “moved by a song to the point that they start shedding tears; they will not shed one tear for the Qur’an”.

Beale, who “doesn’t listen to music anymore”, said he now likes to spend more time around people, his wife and kids and working with the da'wah center in Shifa, visiting public places such as malls, schools and prisons for da'wah purposes.

Beale has now shifted to Riyadh permanently after living in the UAE for some time. "I wanted to move to Saudi (Arabia) because the environment is Islamic, they have ulema (scholars), masjid in every corner, it's safe for families and I want to learn the Arabic language and my religion," he said.

“Studying Arabic is important because it's the language of the Qur'an and Sunnah," he added.

Beale also runs a clothing company for a living: www.miimclothing.com

The rap star-turned-Islamic preacher said the DVDs of the movie will be released this year Insha Allah; however, no dates have been decided yet. It will be screened at different theaters across the world.

With all due respect to this new revert, the ruling of all forms of 'music' being haram is incorrect. Rather, we have been given allowance on listening to Nasheeds and many nasheeds do contain 'music'. It is a matter of interpretation. There are many ex rappers who have reverted to Islam and continue to disseminate the message of Peace with only one difference-the lyrics. These same rap stars have become leading figures in guding Muslim youth back to the teachings of Islam and have become a means of guidance for non Muslims alike. Inclination towards a non moderate interpretation of Islam is becoming a trend, and certain scholars and institutes have become a breeding ground for producing radicalized youth and 'born again Muslims.'

Actually Loolah, he has been muslim for close to ten years. another is that he sat down with major scolars in islam and they all agree that music is haram. Its not something he wants to make up. islam came in a pure form to teach people, do we really need to play music to get the message of islam. I am sure non muslims are not becoming muslims because of so called islamic music. btw, i personally know him and that is why i speak on this matter.

Assalaamu alaikum Kadar

When was the last time you read the mus'haf and implemented what you read with understanding? In it is true guidance from your Lord.

Tupac was a disbeliever and died upon that. Maze is a disbeliever and lives upon that. So as I see it, they're standard bearers of disbelief. As a "Muslim", do you really think it's in your best interest to promote them?

In the mus'haf Allaah commands us not to take the disbelievers as awliyah (friends and helpers). What of promoting them and calling them "genius". Genius is one whom Allaah grants knowledge to. He grants knowledge to those who are pleasing to Him. Those who obey His commands. Haven't you read that in the "Quran"?

May Allaah guide you and me and prevent us from following the footsteps of shaytaan, our clear enemy, ameen.

I would suggest to dig a little more regarding the topic of music. What people do should not be the yardstick to define what is moderate and what is not.
Otherwise we would term even Sahabah such Ibn Abbas and Ibn Mas'ood as being "non-moderate"... while they were the closest to the Sunnah. Being moderate means to adhere to the Prophet's Sunnah.
Yes a minority of scholars permitted music. But the vast majority, including the four imams, ruled against it.
Our intention should be to seek the truth...

Assalaamu alaikum Loolah

With all due respect. You made a blanket statement without proof, which is usually the case when someone is pushing their own opinion.

With regards to "nasheed", if you heard it, you wouldn't recognize it. Nasheed (during the time of the Prophet, peace and prayers be upon him) wasn't a source of guiding "anyone" to Islaam. Allaah choosing him as the Messenger to bring the truth "guidance" and warning the people was what brought about the reversion of the people.

Do you like a challenge? You sound like you do. Well, if you're up for one, I challenge you to stand in prayer in the last third of the night reciting the words of your nasheeds in pray and see whether Allaah grants you guidance by way of those lyrics and music. Please, if you do, let me know how it turns out.

One final point. Being a revert of twenty years, alhamdulillaah, knowing many, many others; in addition to giving and encouraging others to take shahadah, not one, not one of them gave listening to "nasheed" as reason for them becoming Muslim.

O, by the way, what is a "born again Muslim"? Birth is, as far as I know, once in a life time, just as death is.

good luck promoting commercial music for profit. regardless of music being either haram or not, it should not be a way to represent islam anyway. music is music. knowledge is knowledge. it's just like saying you want to have music and songs to teach mathematics or science to people. they're two separate things. you should not use music to teach anything, mathematics, medicine, or religion. don't get it twisted.

Mutah is a good example of leaving the life of sins behind and transforming to a positive person who can inspire youth to change their ways and become better people.
